Professional Bio: Chris Willemse - Director, Tax
Chris is a Director of Tax at Grant Thornton Cayman Islands. He is responsible for leading the tax practice, conducting tax engagements, and building and developing client relationships with local and international clients.
Chris has over 25 years’ experience in tax, spanning Canada, USA and the Americas.
Starting his career in Canada, Chris has spent a major portion of his career working in Big-4 firms.
Chris practiced as an independent tax consultant for 6 years in Canada before relocating to the Cayman Islands in 2006 to specialize in US tax compliance and foreign reporting for a wide range of clientele, including hedge funds and private equity, insurance and individuals.
After 10 years in the Cayman Islands and British Virgin Islands, Chris relocated to the Channel Islands to lead the US tax department of a Big-4 firm, where he was responsible for a significant portfolio of private equity and hedge fund clientele across asset classes.
Chris returned to Grand Cayman in 2019 to join Grant Thornton where his clients are predominantly from the alternative investment industry.
Chris’s financial services experience has focused on private equity and traditional hedge funds, but he also boasts experience in the US taxation and reporting requirements for captive insurance entities, trusts, and corporations.
Chris is a specialist in US reporting requirements for the Alternative Investment Industry and possesses expertise in structuring issues associated with US tax compliance.
